Amber Goes to Her New Home

Amber also finds her forever home (see first picture). Her family currently has a Weim to keep Amber company. She is a lucky pup.

The second pair of photos were taken at Amber's foster home. Foster families are very valuable in preparing a rescue dog to get ready to be adopted.

Two Weimaraner Puppies Saved By An Angel

Several Weimaraner Rescues received the following email this past weekend. The pups have been taken in by Michigan Weimaraner Rescue. Here is Betty's email with personal details XXXX'ed out.

Hello,

My name is Betty XX, I live outside of XXXXX City, In. I am writing to you for two weimaraner pups. Let me first tell you about my self. My deceased husband & I had weimaraners for many years, getting our 1st one in 1958. I am a widow am 78 with a 48 yr old son who has MS living with me. This is a full time job taking care of my son. On Sunday 12/7/08 I was on my back from church going to CVS for a Rx. I saw a small sign on the highway saying Weimaraners, & other small breeds like Yorkies, morkies, etc. I thought how nice it would be to get to see some weimaraner pups again. There aren't many in our area. Finally found the house, pulled into the driveway. To the right of the driveway was a very nice wood shed ( like are sold at Lowes ) on either side are attached wire fences with probably 40+ small breed pups & adults. Didn't see any weimaraners or weimaraner pups. It is so cold windy temp is 12 degrees... A young teenage boy come out of the home, he comes to my blazer I tell him that I am not interested in buying a pup but that we had had weimaraners since 1958. It would be fun to see them again. There just isn't anything cuter than weimaraner pups. He invites me to come around to the back of the garage, so I bundle my self up & follow him. I walk around the garage walking my steps as we have lots of snow & ice. I get behind the large garage & there to the right is a male weimaraner with a what he called a long haired weimaraner female in a large wire pen with 2 plastic carrier to them to get out of the wind. I look straight ahead, in this other large pen is a metal shed with NO DOOR, he goes into the pen leaving the pen door wide open.... He pulls the mom out behind her comes 4 very thin pups, he pushes the last 2 out into the full strength of the harsh wind. All pups are shivering, the last 2 can barely walk. They are in horrible shape. I ask when they were born he says the litter was born Sept 23. This makes the litter about 10-1/2 wks. I asked where he kept the mom & or pups with the harsh winter weather, he answers right here -- why ? I said, weimaraners don't have the coat let alone thin pups to be out in the harsh weather. He said, he saw nothing wrong with them being out there -- I asked why couldn't they been inside the garage or somewhere out of the elements, his answer was that there wasn't anywhere to move hem as his mother had everwhere filled with her adults & pups she breeds & sells. The last 2 pups are so emaciated that they are literally staggering shivering skeltons. The entire litter is listless is under weight --- I scooped with one of the last 2 pups putit inside my coat, for some warmth, inside my coat the pup didn't even snuggle up ! It just laid there not moving while I'm trying to reason with this teenager. He sees nothing wrong with these pups or the mom ... There is no water bowls, no food bowls, no straw in the metal shed. I asked, about food his answer was he puts out 1 bowl for mom & pups.... So we know why that the litter is under weight. He admitted he didn't know that she hadn't even gotten bred by the male till she ballooned up... So no care was given to the mom ! I said, she only had 6 pups, he said, no she had 9 pups... No real answer as to where the other 3 were. He said, he was planning to charge $450.00 for ea one, but with the economy he said he deceided he would charge $200.00 for ea pup. (Note: she paid $100.00 ea for them)

I can not tell you how many emotions I had in me -- boiling up in me... What had been such a simple thing as going to see some cute little happy bouncing weimaraners, instead I am in a horrible nightmare. I asked him what it would take to get this pup who was near death out of here He said, he would take this amount with vet record/AKC paper. So I paid him a lot less than he wanted. At least if the pup died it would be warm in some ones arms. So while he was inside getting in the papers, I called my vet got the answering service told them I had emergency -- he called back told him what I walked into he said he would meet me --- got the papers & left with the pup inside my coat, no moving..... I got down the street couldn't leave that other pup who was in as bad a shape a the one in my coat... So I returned & told the kid that I wanted the other one too,

So I put the 2nd pup inside my coat, with the 1st pup who still wasn't moving but barely breathing. I drove like crazy to my vet in XXXXXXX, In. He couldn't believe what he was seeing anymore than I did. I got there at 4:30pm. He got the smallest out of my coat, the little one was a female. She just laid there in his hands, she was barely breathing... Her core temp was 90.0 REALLY ! She was still so cold, even now having been inside my cost with the heater going full blast. He got her weight was 5lbs & 10-1/2 wks old. He got her on a heating pad, with heated towels over her & heated fluids he put between her tiny shoulder blades. Too help reheat her. Every bone shows -- hips, shoulders, bones in the skull, every ribs on both pups. Next he took the second one out of my coat, this one was a frail male. Not much better than the female. His core temp is 92.6 barely 9 lbs. He does same for the male... Over the next 3 hours he works to save these babies. Who's didn't ask to be born & then neglected... I left with 2 pups at 8:45pm --- I asked him what to do about this crime done to these poor babies. He said, he had documented everything, so to notify the sherriff when I get home so I got the pups in & settled. Then called the sherriff, who notified Animal Control, the head of Animal Control called me with in mins. Told her everything, gave her my vet's name to talk to. Gave location of where I rescued the pups from. They investigated the situation, told the woman that since the teenager is a minor -- she is still responsible for her son's dogs & pups. As did the her own vet.

I learned that there are only 2 states worse than Indiana in protecting animals. Our county it is almost impossible to get anyone charged with anything.

I pray that you can take these precious sweet babies into rescue, I have done what I can for them but I can't do much more, my son takes most of my time & energy. I am so worn out & tired. I had them back to the vet today -- they are thriving now... Both gaining weight, eating growing... Got 1st vaccinations today. Please can you help me by helping them ? They deserve someone with more to give than I can for them --- I can help to transport them somewhere or part way if you can take them ?

Thank you for reading my letter, I pray I hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Betty XXX
